Embarking on a successful journey through the Providence College School of Business’ challenging courses require more than just determination; it demands a support system and the right resources to navigate the path to achievement. The Student Success Center lends this helping hand to students through many resources such as accessibility services, academic advising, academic support services, the Christie Family Tutoring Center, the Multicultural Student Success Center, and the Writing Center.

In the very first month of the semester, the tutoring center established itself as a guiding light of support for business students. In September, there were 192 PCSB subject tutoring sessions. This number of appointments can only be attributed to the value these students receive through these sessions. Dylan Poet ’24 has been an accounting tutor for the last three semesters. He aids students in intermediate as well as advanced accounting. “During my time at the tutoring center, I’ve really come to appreciate and understand the positive impact it has on students,” he said. “I personally believe the tutoring center does a lot more than just help with homework.”

The tutoring center aims for students to not only excel academically but to truly grasp the core of their subjects. “I’ve had students come to me to enhance their study strategies, to better understand ‘the why’ of what they’re doing in class, or even to ask for internship and career advice,” Poet said. “I think this goes to show that the tutoring center does a lot more than just improving grades, but it also helps them be more independent and confident in their own abilities to succeed.”

Additionally, the tutoring center isn’t limited to one-on-one sessions. You can also opt to study with a group of friends when preparing for an upcoming exam or bring your peers together to brainstorm ideas for group projects. Tutors aim to foster productive discussions and facilitate fruitful conversations.

Furthermore, the Writing Center serves as a valuable resource for PCSB students as well. The writing center is not limited to refining your English papers, although it excels in that too. So far this semester, writing center tutors have conducted over 250 writing consultations for business majors. “The writing center is not only for students who may be struggling with writing — it’s for writers of all skill levels, including graduate students and faculty,” said Will Toner, senior associate director of the writing center.

In the realm of business, writing often involves a high degree of collaboration. Toner emphasizes this collaborative nature. “Writing is a social activity, and all writers can benefit from talking to interested, trained writing consultants about their work,” he said. “Business majors should think about writing as a collaborative process that requires interaction and attention to the audience and understand that good writing practices carry over into becoming effective negotiators, presenters, and leaders.”

The writing center can help with a wide variety of writing assignments including case studies, projects, reports, etc. Bring your writing assignment during any stage in the process, whether you’re seeking to craft a captivating introduction or the final touches to seamlessly bring your paper together. Additionally, bring your personal statements, cover letters, and resumes for review. The writing center will assist you in obtaining the perfect balance between showcasing your personal and professional brand!

Take advantage of both of these valuable resources and schedule an appointment today! Students can schedule appointments online , in person by stopping by the SSC, or by calling the writing center at (401) 865-1286 or the tutoring center at (401) 865-2855.
