Graduate Students in the Finance Lab

Developed in conjunction with leading employers (CVS, Johnson & Johnson, PwC, and others), the Providence College Business Analytics Graduate Certificate Program provides employees an opportunity to develop strategic critical-thinking and decision making competencies using data.

This 3-course, 9-credit-hour business analytics certificate is taught by PC faculty recognized as experts in their fields. The Business Analytics Graduate Certificate Program provides a rapid foundational education in decision making and quantitative analysis, with a focus on building confidence to use data to make strategic decisions. This competency has been identified as an integral business skill all employees will need to lead change and make better business decisions.

Providence College graduate business certificate programs are flexible, featuring a variety class meeting times, and can usually be completed within a year. Generally, these courses meet at 4 p.m. or at 7 p.m. during the week. However, there are accelerated graduate business courses that may include a few weekend days or meet during the winter or summer terms.

Courses

The Business Analytics Graduate Certificate Program is a 3-course, 9-credit hour program consisting of two required electives and one capstone, consulting project course. Typically, this program is completed within a year. Specific course meeting times can be found in the Semester Course Offerings schedule.

MBA 687  Statistics for Business Analytics
Many managerial decisions—regardless of their functional orientation—are increasingly relying on data and business analytics. The abundance of available data has dramatically changed the way businesses operate in a wide range of disciplines and industries. This course provides students an opportunity to enhance their knowledge of statistical techniques commonly used in business analytics. Unlike many traditional statistics courses, this course is very practice- and data-driven with the primary objective of increasing students’ ability to solve business problems with data using a variety of statistical techniques. Offered in the fall semester.

MBA 688 Data Exploration and Visualization
Business analytics provides techniques for collecting and examining data, as well as the methods for turning that data into actionable knowledge.   The course will explore analytical techniques to: describe what has happened (descriptive data mining), use the past to predict the future (predictive analytics), and identify what is the best action to take (predictive data mining).   The course also examines data visualizations and querying database sources. Offered over winter session.

MBA 691  Business Analytics Consulting Project
Many managerial decisions—regardless of their functional orientation—are increasingly relying on data and business analytics. The abundance of available data has dramatically changed the way businesses operate in manufacturing, service operations, marketing, and finance. This course provides an opportunity for students to integrate and apply the analytical skills and knowledge learned in previous courses to a real-world analytics project. Offered in the spring semester.

Requirements

College-Level Statistics Course: students are required to have completed an undergraduate-level statistics course or the PC course MTH 217: Statistical Analysis for Business Decisions I prior to taking the first class in the Business Analytics Graduate Certificate program. The PC School of Continuing Education offers MTH 217, frequently during the summer.

Excel Proficiency: students must demonstrate Microsoft Excel proficiency in preparation of the Business Analytics Certificate courses. Confirmation of Microsoft Excel Certification, which can be completed online, at an in-person program of the student’s choice, or at Providence College through the Chirico Career Center, must be provided to the PCSB Graduate Program Office prior to the start of Business Analytics Graduate Certificate classes.

Credits

Students register for three courses that, once completed, count toward the Business Analytics Graduate Certificate. Students who successfully complete the certificate program may use their nine graduate credits toward their MBA degree. Admission into the PC MBA Program and GMAT/GRE waiver consideration will be reviewed for up to one year after certificate completion.*

Fee

The program fee is the same as all business, graduate, credit courses. Refer to the Bursar’s website for updated information on fees. Courses must be paid for, in full, at the time of registration each semester.

Applying Credits to the PC MBA Program

Students will register for three courses that, once completed, will count toward the Business Analytics Graduate Certificate. Students who successfully complete the certificate program may use their nine management credits toward their MBA degree. Admission into the PC MBA Program and GMAT/GRE waiver consideration will be reviewed for up to one year after certificate completion.*

*Expedited admission into the PC MBA Program is dependent upon the completion of an undergraduate degree from an accredited institution with a minimum GPA of 3.0, and the completion of the Business Analytics Graduate Certificate Program.
