How to Find Success in Marketing at Providence College School of Business ft. Rae Caloura

By Mazie Goscinak ’24

The Providence College School of Business is known for its rigorous academics and for challenging students to strive for success in and out of the classroom. This may seem a bit daunting to new students not knowing what to expect. Rae Caloura, assistant professor of practice in marketing, shared some tips on how students can find success as marketing majors.

Staying organized and knowing when work is due is often half the battle when it comes to finishing assignments. Caloura recommended that students create a visualization of the assignments they have for the semester — either an electronic or physical planner. She emphasized knowing what you have to do for the next week, the next month, and even the whole semester. Students should always check their class syllabus and write down all upcoming deadlines. Caloura also advised that every time a professor mentions a date in class to write it down. She often will reiterate assignment deadlines to her classes and expects students to write them down to stay organized.

Getting involved on campus as a marketing major is also important. Caloura is the adviser for the business school’s American Marketing Association chapter, which brings in guest speakers throughout the semester who inform students about their area of marketing. These events are good networking opportunities for students.

Clubs are also a great outlet for creativity, Caloura said. They allow students to explore and discover their passions. Students should be open to all opportunities, even if they are not perfect at everything they try.

Networking can be intimidating and difficult for students, especially if they do not know where to start. Caloura also suggested ways students can initiate conversations with these alumni and make the first step into their careers. The Friar network of alumni is always more than willing to help any current students and answer any questions they may have. Caloura recommended that students should always be prepared to ask meaningful questions because people enjoy sharing their insight to those who want to learn, grow, and better themselves.

In addition to the business school curriculum and the marketing major’s requirements, students must take classes such Development of Western Civ, philosophy, and theology. Initially, many students may not recognize the benefits of these courses, especially if they are preparing to work in a business setting. Caloura emphasized how these classes are unique to Providence College and help to build students’ critical thinking skills and curiosity. When students enter the work force, they will be faced with choices and decisions. These core classes help students to build their critical thinking skills and understand the difference between fact and opinions. When students graduate from Providence College, the majority of them may not be debating topics discussed in DWC classes, such as Dante’s Inferno, but they will be always evaluating. They will be able to tap into those skills developed through the liberal arts curriculum and will be able to apply it in any context.

Many marketing students have found success at the business school. Caloura summed up her top tips for students to find similar success. She said students should “always be curious and never stop learning.” There are no dumb questions, and students should not be afraid to ask them. Caloura also advised students to “have a growth mindset.” As students, professors, and people, our abilities are not fixed. We always have the capacity to grow and every time we learn something new, it represents growth, she said.
