“I was able to not only network, but truly get a feel of how a small company has been able to successfully grow into the jewelry empire it is today.”
Sarah Viens ’17, from Cumberland, Rhode Island, was one of seven students chosen from a pool of almost 1,000 candidates for internship positions at ALEX AND ANI. The eco-conscious jewelry and accessories company, best known for their energy-infused bangles, is based in Cranston, Rhode Island, and is popular nationwide. Viens, a marketing major and a studio art minor with a concentration in digital imaging, was placed as a member of the ALEX AND ANI content marketing team under the digital strategy department. She spent 11 weeks with a mixed group of five team members ranging from copywriters to content specialists, writing content for the ALEX AND ANI blog and mobile app. Sarah stated, “I typically wrote anything on the spectrum of new product launches to ‘what shade of nail polish is perfect for you.’ The blog posts would resonate a certain ALEX AND ANI symbol or collection. The blogs were basically a way to call out certain bangles!” Viens also applied her digital imaging background to her position by photographing and editing shots of products for content across all social platforms. She always thought that she would want to be in a traditional marketing position, but her experience with ALEX AND ANI taught her that content creation is definitely the path she is interested in exploring more of in her professional future.
Viens first heard about this exclusive internship program at the Providence College career fair where ALEX AND ANI representatives were recruiting students. She followed up with the recruiters multiple times to show that she was serious about joining the company. She noted, “I think my biggest piece of advice for students looking to intern with a company is to show extreme interest and to be persistent. I think it helps give students a big step ahead of the competition.”
Viens took all the right steps in her internship application process and had an incredible summer experience. She even had the pleasure of meeting the founder, CEO, and COO of ALEX AND ANI, Carolyn Rafaellian. Although this was a major moment during her experience, she is proud to announce the true highlight of her summer: she was asked to continue with the content marketing team as a part-time Jr. Content Marketing Associate throughout the school year!
